This is Chile's southernmost region. Located some 3,000km (1,900mi) south of Santiago, it covers an area of 132,000 sq km (slightly larger than England), without including the 1,250,000 sq km of Chile's Antarctic Territory, and has a population of about 150,000 people. It contains some of Chile's most fabulous scenery, which includes world-famous Torres del Paine National Park, the Strait of Magellan, Tierra del Fuego, Cape Horn, the Patagonian channels, huge glaciers and ice caps, and hundreds of lakes.

Torres del Paine with their world-famous granite spires and the two-colored "horns" rearing up almost vertically from the Patagonian plain, surrounded by emerald-green and cobalt-blue lakes, make up one of the most stunning sights anywhere. Well-kept trails and a string of shelters make it easy to reach its glaciers, enjoy the fauna -which includes guanacos, pumas, rheas (a sort of poor-man's ostrich), wild geese, foxes and condors, among others-, the hauntingly beautiful Magellanic forests, with gnarled, bearded trees, the waterfalls, the hidden ponds... and to attempt the mother of all treks: the grand tour around the massif, which takes at least four days and quite a bit of stamina.
